About the Workshop
Marika Kotani’s bamboo workshop is rooted in generations of Japanese craftsmanship. Each piece is created by hand using traditional techniques passed down over centuries. Care, patience, and the wisdom of quiet observation shape every object.
Our ethos: preserve the honesty of natural bamboo, celebrate imperfection, and work slowly. The artistry is found in the details—the joinery, the touch, and the natural variations of each material. Every basket or tea tool is an expression of respect for nature and heritage.
Materials & Process
We begin by selecting only the finest, mature bamboo grown in Japan. Each stalk is examined for color, tone, and strength. The chosen bamboo is seasoned naturally, respecting seasonal rhythms.
Traditional splitting and shaving tools reveal the bamboo’s supple character. Every strip is measured and cut by hand, then patiently woven. Small variations are not flaws—they are the signature of true handwork.
Surfaces are finished with gentle oils or natural polish, emphasizing the soft luster of the bamboo. All work is carried out in silence and concentration, following ancient craftsman’s routines. The result is an object to be used, cherished, and handed down.
Philosophy
In every creation we honor the spirit of wabi-sabi: simplicity, natural grace, and patience. Our bamboo pieces speak softly of time, shaped by nature, guided by human hands.
